What is a dental cavity?

A dental cavity typically happens due to inadequate brushing or flossing as well as frequently consuming sugary foods. The process that leads to a cavity is known as “dental caries” or “tooth decay”.

Basically, the process of dental caries starts when food particles remain on your tooth’s surface for an extended period of time. These food particles attract bacteria that metabolise the particles and release acid which then forms a cavity.

What are tooth fillings?

We say that a tooth filling is kind of like a patch for a damaged or decayed tooth. When a tooth has a hole or is hurt, our dentist removes the damaged part and fills it. This helps the tooth stay strong, stops further damage, and makes sure the tooth can still function like normal.

The filling can be silver, white, or another colour, depending on what you and ourdentist decide.

Dental Fillings Rebuild Your Damaged Teeth

We would recommend you have a dental filling if your tooth’s health or its appearance is compromised. This could be due to decay, cracks, sensitivity or the discolouration of teeth. At Kedron Family Dental in Brisbane, we use high quality white, resin based dental fillings that have great strength, bonding, wear and aesthetic properties for a natural and strong smile. The Benefits of Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or otherwise damaged surfaces of the teeth. Our dental filling materials at Kedron Family Dental include white composite resin, used to even out your tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing. This type of dental filling is discrete and will help you achieve a natural-looking smile.

What Happens Before, During and After a Dental Filling?

At Kedron Family Dental, our team are committed to making sure you feel happy and comfortable before, during, and after your procedure, and will happily answer any questions you may have. After an initial check-up at our Brisbane clinic, and if it is decided that you do need a filling and you’re happy to go ahead, one of our qualified dentists will begin the procedure by:

  • Preparing your tooth in order to restore the decay or damage. The decay or damage is carefully removed, and the area is cleansed to remove bacteria or debris before the restoration is completed.
  • After the cavity has been filled with a dental filling, your dentist will discuss steps you can take to prevent decay from forming under or around the filling, or in other teeth, and the best ways to care for your dental filling.

Please note: fillings will naturally wear over time through normal chewing habits and can be accelerated if you are grinding or clenching your teeth.

If you suspect that you may need a filling or would like find out more information, contact one of our staff members today on (07) 3357 9600.

How long do fillings last?

The lifespan of dental fillings can vary based on several factors, including the:

  •  type of filling material used
  • size and location of the filling
  • individual oral hygiene practices.

Average filling lifespans:

Amalgam Fillings

Silver amalgam fillings tend to last around 10 to 15 years.

Composite Fillings

Tooth-coloured composite fillings may last 7 to 10 years, although advancements in materials are extending their longevity.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are highly durable and can last 15 years or more.

Regular dental check-ups are essential for monitoring the condition of fillings and identifying any signs of wear or deterioration. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, can also contribute to the longevity of dental fillings. It’s important to consult with your dentist if you experience any issues with a filling, such as sensitivity or pain.

Are there any risks or complications associated with getting a filling?

While getting a dental filling is a common and generally safe procedure, there are some potential risks and complications to be aware of:

Allergic Reactions

In rare cases, patients may be allergic to certain filling materials, such as amalgam (silver fillings) or other components. Make sure to inform your dentist about any known allergies.

Tooth Sensitivity

After a filling, some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. This usually resolves on its own, but if it persists, consult your dentist.

Pain or Discomfort

In some cases, patients may experience pain or discomfort after a filling. This can be due to factors such as a high filling, improper bite alignment, or nerve irritation. These issues can often be resolved with adjustments.

Filling Failure

Over time, fillings may wear down, chip, or become loose, especially if oral hygiene is not adequately maintained. Regular dental check-ups can help address any issues early.

Infection

In rare cases, there is a risk of infection, particularly if decay is extensive, and the pulp of the tooth is involved. In such cases, root canal treatment may be necessary.

What our patients say

On my recent visit I took my little boy for his first dental experience. The staff were wonderful and hygienist Alex did an amazing job of making him feel comfortable and ensuring he had an enjoyable experience. He had no complaints and even talks about when we will go back to the dentist. As my dental experience as a child was terrible, I could not recommend Alex and the team highly enough for a visit for children to make them comfortable and a positive experience.

I went for a routine check up and clean as a new customer to the practice. From checking in (Abby) to the clean (Dr Chantal and Kian), everyone was very professional and thorough. A very comprehensive assessment was made and a meticulous clean was provided by Dr Chantal. Overall great dental experience and I will be back.

I am a white knuckle dental patient (a product of school mobile dental care back in the 1960’s) I had a crown installed all in one visit today (less than 3 hours). Totally painless. All staff were wonderful and highly empathetic to my issues. The practice is highly recommended, which is why I have been a patient at Kedron for the last 15 years.

Elwynn has been my dentist for many years, and without a doubt is one of the best! Extremely professional and knowledgeable; but where he is really ahead of the rest, is the care and explanation he provides throughout any treatment or examination. Great to have him in the Brisbane area!
