Kids Paediatric Dentistry
What is Kids Dentistry?
Kids dentistry is a type of dentistry focused on the dental health and well-being of children from infancy through adolescence. Our dentists are dental professionals who have great experience addressing the unique oral health needs of growing children.
What to Expect at Your Child’s First Visit
It’s a significant milestone to bring your child to the dentist for the first time, and at Kedron Family Dental, we recognise that this experience can be both unfamiliar and a bit overwhelming for both parent and child. Rest assured, our dental team is committed to creating a welcoming and comforting environment for your child’s first dental visit.
A Warm Welcome
When you enter the doors at Kedron Family Dental, our friendly staff will warmly greet you and your child. We want to make sure you both feel comfortable and answer any questions you may have.
Dental Exam & Cleaning
Your child will be introduced to our dental team, who will explain each step of the process to ensure they feel comfortable. The dental exam involves a thorough but gentle assessment of your child’s oral health, including a check for any signs of tooth decay. We also assess their gum health, and bite alignment. We then follow with a careful and kid-friendly dental cleaning to remove any plaque or tartar and leave their teeth refreshed.
X-rays
If necessary, an x-ray will be conducted to provide a more detailed view of your child’s dental structure. Our dental team will ensure that all safety measures are taken, and you will be informed about the purpose and benefits of your child’s dental x-rays for better understanding.
Education & Next Steps
Following the examination, our dental team will take the time to discuss the findings with you and your child and address any concerns you may have. This includes guidance on proper oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, and age-appropriate dental care. Should any treatments or follow-up appointments be recommended, we will discuss these steps transparently.
How Soon Should I Take My Child to See the Dentist?
We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by the age of 1 or within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth.
Early dental visits are important for monitoring oral development, addressing any emerging issues, and providing guidance on proper oral care practices. By establishing a positive dental experience for your child from an early age, this can help build a foundation for a lifetime of good oral health habits.
If you haven’t taken your child to the dentist yet and they are over the age of 1, it’s never too late to schedule that first visit. Throughout childhood and into adulthood, regular dental check-ups are important for maintaining optimal oral health.

Tips For Your Child’s Dental Health
Here are some tips to keep your child’s dental health at its best.
Early Dental Visits
Book your child’s first dental visit by the age of 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth eruption. Regular check-ups help monitor oral development and address any dental concerns early on.
Establish a Routine
Encourage a consistent oral hygiene routine, including brushing teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Turn it into an enjoyable and interactive experience to foster good routines.
Healthy Diet
Limit sugary snacks and beverages. Encourage a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and calcium-rich foods to support strong, healthy teeth.
Protective Measures
If your child participates in contact sports, provide and encourage the use of a mouthguard to protect their teeth and mouth from injuries.
Lead by Example
Demonstrate good oral hygiene practices by brushing and flossing your own teeth. Children often learn by observing their parent’s habits.
Regular Dental Check-ups
Book regular dental check-ups every 6 months. These visits are essential for professional cleanings, preventive treatments, and addressing any dental concerns as soon as possible.
Address Thumb-Sucking
If your child sucks their thumb, consult with our dentist for guidance on how to address this habit to prevent future potential dental issues.
Your Child May be Eligible for
Free Kids Dental
The Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS) provides Medicare-funded dental treatment to eligible children aged 2-17 up to the value of Check up $179 or CDBS $1052 over 2 years. At Kedron Family Dental, we bulk bill all eligible CDBS patients, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs.
Our team at Kedron Family Dental strongly believe in this scheme because it allows us to expose children to the dental setting from a young age, thereby setting them up for a life of healthy teeth without the added burden of out-of-pocket costs.
Our paediatric dentistry team covers all local areas through Brisbane’s North, including Chermside, Kalinga, Gordon Park, Wavell Heights, Clayfield, Lutwyche, Geebung, Nundah, Hendra & surrounding suburbs.
