Dental veneers have emerged as a transformative solution for patients seeking to enhance the appearance of their teeth, helping to correct a variety of cosmetic issues in the mouth.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. They can give you a brighter and more uniform smile by helping with issues like discolouration, gaps, or misalignment.

Dental veneers are a modern technique that can be used to change the shape, alignment and/or colour of teeth towards the front of the mouth. They’re essentially a thin shell of either porcelain or composite material that is bonded to the front of the tooth to improve its appearance. The procedure to place veneers causes minimal discomfort and patients are commonly surprised how painless it is.

At Central Smiles, our Dentists are extremely well trained and experienced to provide this procedure. We regularly surpass the expectations of our patients. We welcome patients that have cosmetic teeth concerns and will guide you through the options available and costs involved so you too can have that Hollywood smile.

Are there different types of veneers?

The two primary types of dental veneers are porcelain veneers and composite veneers, each with their own set of advantages.

Porcelain Veneers

Material: Made from thin shells of porcelain and closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth.

Appearance: These are known for their translucency and ability to reflect light similarly to natural teeth.

Durability: Theys are highly durable and resistant to staining.

Colour Stability: These maintain theircolour over time, ensuring a consistently bright and natural-looking smile.

Customisation: These are custom-made for each patient and are tailored to match your desired shape and colour.

Composite Veneers

Material: These are made from a tooth-coloured composite resin material.

Application: They can often be applied in a single dental visit, as the material is shaped directly onto your teeth.

Cost: They’re generally more budget-friendly than porcelain veneers.

Repairability: These are more susceptible to chipping or staining compared to porcelain. However, any damage can be easily repaired.

Versatility: They offer versatility in terms of colour adjustments and alterations. This provides flexibility in achieving desired aesthetics.

The decision between porcelain and composite veneers depends on various factors, including your budget, aesthetic goals, and the recommendations of your dentist. While porcelain veneers are often preferred for their durability and natural appearance, composite veneers may be better suited if you are seeking a more cost-effective and quicker solution.

Who gets veneers?

Veneers are an increasingly popular cosmetic dentistry option for patients seeking to enhance their smile’s aesthetic.

Common candidates for veneers include those with the following dental issues:

  • Stained or discoloured teeth that do not respond well to teeth whitening procedures
  • Chipped, worn-down, or unevenly shaped teeth
  • Minor misalignments or gaps between teeth (a less invasive alternative to orthodontic treatment).

You would need a consultation with our dentist to determine your suitability for veneers. Here, oral health, expectations, and desired outcomes are assessed to ensure that veneers align with your unique needs and goals.

What is the procedure for getting veneers?

The veneer procedure typically involves three main stages: diagnosis and treatment planning, preparation, and bonding.

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

A consultation between yourself and the dentist is needed first. This is where aesthetic goals are discussed, and a clinical examination of the teeth is conducted. This examination includes an oral health assessment, x-rays or impressions, and a customised treatment plan to address specific changes in your tooth shape, colour, and alignment.

Preparation

Following the initial consultation, is the preparation phase. During this stage, a small amount of your tooth(usually less than a millimeter) is carefully removed from the front surface h to create space for the veneers. We then take impressions or moulds of the prepared teeth to serve as the foundation for crafting custom veneers in our dental laboratory. Our dentist then places the temporary veneers on your teeth to protect them and provide a visual preview of the final results while the permanent veneers are being made.

Bonding

The final stage is the bonding process. This involves the evaluation of the fit, colour, and overall aesthetics of the custom veneers before they are permanently attached to your teeth. Your tooth surface is then etched to create a slightly rough texture to better allow for a strong bond between the tooth and the veneer. Our dentist applies dental cement to the back of the veneer and then carefully places it onto the prepared tooth. A special light is used to activate the cement to ensure a secure bond. After curing, we trim off any excess material, and make the necessary adjustments to achieve an optimal bite and appearance.

How long do veneers last?

The longevity of veneers depends on various factors, including:

  •  the material used
  • oral hygiene practices
  • your own individual habits.

On average, our porcelain veneers can last up to10 to 15 years or even longer with proper care.

Porcelain is a popular material thanks to its durability and resistance to stains. However, you will still need to attend regular dental check-ups, praftice diligent oral hygiene routines, and avoid habits like teeth grinding or biting on hard objects to help preserve your veneers.

Composite resin veneers may have a shorter lifespan, typically lasting from 5 to 7 years, but they are generally more easily repairable.

What our patients say

Google Review

On my recent visit I took my little boy for his first dental experience. The staff were wonderful and hygienist Alex did an amazing job of making him feel comfortable and ensuring he had an enjoyable experience. He had no complaints and even talks about when we will go back to the dentist. As my dental experience as a child was terrible, I could not recommend Alex and the team highly enough for a visit for children to make them comfortable and a positive experience.

I went for a routine check up and clean as a new customer to the practice. From checking in (Abby) to the clean (Dr Chantal and Kian), everyone was very professional and thorough. A very comprehensive assessment was made and a meticulous clean was provided by Dr Chantal. Overall great dental experience and I will be back.

I am a white knuckle dental patient (a product of school mobile dental care back in the 1960’s) I had a crown installed all in one visit today (less than 3 hours). Totally painless. All staff were wonderful and highly empathetic to my issues. The practice is highly recommended, which is why I have been a patient at Kedron for the last 15 years.

Elwynn has been my dentist for many years, and without a doubt is one of the best! Extremely professional and knowledgeable; but where he is really ahead of the rest, is the care and explanation he provides throughout any treatment or examination. Great to have him in the Brisbane area!
